A Promise To Seniors
We owe our very
freedom to the generations who came before
us. From our founding, great Patriots such as Samuel Adams stood up
against
tyranny and challenged his fellow Americans, "If
you love wealth more than liberty,
the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of
freedom,
depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch
down and
lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and
may
posterity forget that you were our countrymen." He and others fought
and
defeated the most powerful empire on earth to establish this great
Nation.
Whenever
our liberty was threatened, great Americans
answered the call to defend our freedom. In our recent history,
Americans who
are still among us defeated the spread of evil totalitarian regimes in
World
War II. They came home and built the greatest economic prosperity the
world has
ever seen. Along the way, a new evil emerged in communism. They fought
and
contained it in Korea and Vietnam. During their lifetimes, our
government
passed legislation and made promises to these great Americans. The
social
security and Medicare programs were established. American citizens paid
into
these systems in good faith.
These
programs were established before I was born. Whether
or not I agree or disagree with the wisdom of these programs is
immaterial.
These are promises made to generations before me by the United States
of
America.
As
your Congressman, I will uphold the honor of our great
Nation and never betray a promise made to the people who built it. I
will
oppose any cuts to social security and Medicare for those generations
before
me. I will also follow in your example and ensure I fight to preserve
prosperity and liberty for those generations that follow me as your
generation
did for mine.
