Common Sense Principles

Representation or Compromise

The House of Representatives is the people’s house. It is our link from our neighborhood to our federal government. A Representative’s mission is to vote on behalf of the constituents of their Congressional District. A Congressman’s job is to advocate for their constituency; to promote the good of the district and the Nation and oppose the detriment of it. Currently our Congress has engaged in backroom dealing and political barter and given it the euphemism of “compromise.”

Compromise is not bad. In fact it is the essence of a Representative’s job. A Congressman must determine the “will of the people.” Every Congressional District consists of conservatives, moderates, and liberals. The “will of the people” is not going to please all of them equally. The simple act of representation involves a compromise of these groups for the good of the Nation and the good of the district. For the system to function properly, this is where the compromise must end, however. A Congressman cannot compromise on whom they represent.

Problems arise when Congressional members “Compromise” with each other in Washington DC. Our Nation’s history is full of them. The “3/5ths Compromise” of 1787 was an agreement to count every 5 slaves as 3 people for taxation and representation. None had liberty or the right to vote. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was an agreement reached in the House of Representatives to permit the institution of slavery in the Louisiana Purchase. The practice of slavery was opposed by the majority of American citizens, but continued for almost 100 years by compromise in the House of Representatives. Most recently, the majority of American citizens opposed The Affordable Care Act. The bill was passed by compromise.

When Compromise is the guiding philosophy, the American people lose. Representation must be non-negotiable. Your voice must be loudly exclaimed on the floor of the House of Representatives, not lost in a backroom deal.

As your Congressman, I will represent you. My adult life has been spent fighting for all Americans as a United States Marine, not just some Americans or the ones I agreed with.

I will take that same philosophy to Washington DC. I will fight for the 53rd Congressional District as a leader, not a follower.
